Death is for the living.
What do we mean by “death is for the living”? Simply that how we address death can profoundly enrich how we live our lives. By upholding the Jewish tradition that the dead should be buried as simply and naturally as possible, Kimah strives to show respect for life even as it shows respect for death.
To that end, every Kimah casket is handmade using select wood and natural-fiber rope; no metal or plastic is used. Panels are biscuit-joined, and all other joints are doweled. Our glue contains no animal products and is biodegradable. Caring for the Earth in life means caring for the Earth in death.
In order to allow nature to take its course, Jewish caskets are traditionally made to be permeable. Kimah caskets follow in this tradition, but with a difference: the holes we drill in the floors of our caskets are arranged according to Galileo's diagram of the Pleiades (Kimah in Hebrew).
We are literally made of stars, and so it's fitting that stars should be the portals through which we return to matter's flow.
We hope that you won't need your Kimah casket any time soon, so we've designed our caskets to serve your more immediate needs. The Kimah Custom and the Kimah Simple come equipped with shelves to enhance your life just as they will ultimately enhance your death. At Kimah we believe that the continuity of life and death is something we can live with.
